Kay Peterson-Cook
in 1995
Kay’s pioneer history began in Crested Butte in 1980 with an old S.E. Frame paper-boy bike built by her husband (Hall of Famer Pioneer, Don Cook). It was a five speed klunker with Atom drum brakes front and rear, making this little lady the first local female mountain biker in Crested Butte. Kay started promoting fat tire racing in the Crested Butte area during the 80’s. She took over the job of directing Fat Tire Bike Week, the world’s oldest mountain bike festival in 1989. In addition to her Fat Tire Bike Week role, Kay is very active with the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association (CBMBA) and is a member of the newly created Gunnison County Trails Commission.
