Honoring the Legacy of Repack
This past weekend, mountain biking enthusiasts and history buffs gathered at the Marin Museum of Bicycling for the highly anticipated re-release of Charlie Kelly’s book Fat Tire Flyer: Repack and the Birth of Mountain Biking. The title of the book-signing event paid homage to Repack, the legendary downhill race that had a central role in the birth of mountain biking. The celebration brought together pioneers of the sport, passionate riders, and new generations eager to experience the history of the sport we love.
The excitement in the air was palpable as Joe Breeze kicked off the event with an overview of Repack’s origins in the 1970s. Kelly shared firsthand accounts of the original races, recounting stories of innovation, camaraderie, and the unbreakable spirit that defined the early mountain biking scene. Following the book talk, a lively panel discussion brought together some of the most influential figures in mountain biking history. Wende Cragg and Otis Guy joined Kelly and Breeze to share insights into the evolution of the sport, the significance of Repack in shaping modern mountain biking, and the ways in which cycling brought them closer to the natural environment. Audience members had the opportunity to ask questions and engage with the legends who helped bring the sport to life. As the event came to a close, attendees gathered to take photos, exchange stories, celebrate shared passions and appreciate the Museum’s
