Off-Road Bike With a Disc Brake
Date: 1974
In Spokane, Washington, in the spring of 1974, Bob Crispin widened the rear of a Schwinn Varsity frame and added a Shimano Disc brake and Shimano alpine gearing. His goal was to be able to ride in snow. The following summers found him riding the trails of Spokane—and having others ask him to build bikes for them. He fitted a trailer to his bike and called it a “Tankagnolo.” His story appeared in the May/June 1978 issue of Bike World magazine. Image courtesy of Bob Crispin.
