Fat Tire Bike with All New Frame and All New Parts

Date: 1977

Like several Velo Club Tamalpais members, Joe Breeze was a fat-tire rider as well as a road racer. In 1974 he learned to build frames. Repack promoter Charlie Kelly, who kept breaking old Schwinn frames, asked Joe to build him a new bike for off-road riding. Joe designed an off-road frame of straight-gauge 4130 large-diameter, thin-wall cro-moly tubing. He bought enough tubing for ten frames, as several riders wanted new bikes. He finished his prototype in 1977 and completed the other nine by Spring 1978, building them up with all new parts. This photo was taken by Wende Cragg in October, 1977: Joe with Breezer Number 1 just after its first ride, a win on Repack.
